A Dangerous Game (Open)

Great Northern Ocean 23rd March 2021

Fleet Captain Mark Sullivan sighed as he stood looking down at the touchscreen table that the Achkaerinese military and intelligence communities called the 'chessboard' he commanded the INS Firebreather, a Riviere class destroyer in the Achkaerinese navy his current orders were to hunt down and deal with the rogue Clysperi submarine that was somewhere in the Northern Ocean, they hadn't had a lot of success yet but that was perhaps to be expected, the ocean was rather vast and the Clysperi submarine by comparison very very small. Mark was the senior officer in the group of ships that were assigned to this task and was in the process of reworking the search pattern again when the bridge chatter increased for a moment.

"Sir." the coms officer said "You need to hear this."
"On speaker." Mark said

"IMS Poseidon, repeat this is the IMS Poseidon declaring an emergency ship has been hijacked by the Sorority of Materna...."

The distress call was cut off and Mark's eyes widened, what the heck were the Sorority doing this far north? "All right set a course for the Poseidon tell the Normandy they'll have to search alone for now. Contact Command let them know what's occurring."

INS Valiant, Strait of Shaw, 13th July 1998

The INS Valiant cruised slowly through the Strait of Shaw heading down to the mid region of the strait, specifically the Marseilles area. Standing in command on the bridge was Captain Peter Azurewind, Crown Prince of Achkaerin and somewhat lucky to have his rank, in truth he felt like he'd been accelerated up the ranks because of who he was rather than his ability, something he was keen on seeing stopped when the time came for him to occupy the throne. He was reading over the orders that had been sent to him for this mission, they were very weird when compared to what he was used to most of his orders were patrol routes this was a special forces operation and he was the chauffeur. A few weeks earlier at the beginning of May the ruling family of Aquitaine had been killed, assassinated by the Marseilles military, it read very much like the feud over Aquitaine sovereignty had come to a head but then out of nothing a message had landed at the Achkaerinese embassy in Montaulon, the capital of Marseilles, and it was the contents of that message that had brought the Valiant to the Strait. It was a dark cloudy night, no moon, no stars were visible, the rain was falling lightly

"Approaching position sir." the helm officer Ensign Hermione Bennett said
"Thank you Hermione go to all stop." Peter said
"All stop aye sir." Hermione said
"Aoife?" Peter asked
"No sign of any Marseilles reaction to our presence, no shadows, no aircraft." Lieutenant Aoife Thorn the senior weapons officer aboard the ship said
"And now we find out if this is for real or some sort of elaborate trap." Commander Celine Tyler, the ships XO said

"Yep" Peter said he looked at his watch, their contact from inside Marseilles, their source on this had stated in communication that one of the Aquitaine noble family, the newborn daughter had survived the massacre of the family. This was an extraction of that child from the country. "Celine."
"Captain?" Celine asked
"Launch it." Peter said
"Aye sir." Celine said she picked up the radio "This is the XO commence Spectrum"

No sooner had Celine given the order than a Finch was taking off from the Valiant and flying into Marseilles, the hope was that the stealth features on the helicopter would get the onboard Achkaerin Special Forces Team in and out without being detected. The ASF team was Silver Troop under the command of First Lieutenant William Yates the helicopter journeyed not more than a couple of miles inland, settling on the Marseilles coast in the countryside close to the cliffs, the ASF team disembarked and fanned out securing a small perimeter, William looked at his watch they were right on time now where was their contact? His orders were clear, he was to wait up to two  hours and then get back to the ship if the contact was a no show. Fortunately it didn't take long before a lone off road vehicle pulled up, out got a man carrying a baby seat in one hand a sports over his shoulder, he moved quickly forwards to where the Achkaerinese soldiers were waiting.

"Captain Cartier Aquitaine Yeomanry." the man said
"Lieutenant Yates." William said "That her?" he indicated the child in the seat.
"Yes this is Daničle Aveline." Cartier said "Technically she's the Duchess of Aquitaine."
"What's in the bag?" William asked, unzipping it to inspect
"Baby clothes, nappies, wipes, bottles, her favourite stuffed toy and some documents that are for her when she's older." Cartier said
"Ok." William said he took the bag and the seat containing Daničle and headed back to the finch "Silver Troop move it out."

Shortly thereafter back aboard the Valiant Peter was crouched in his quarters changing Daničle's nappy, it was something he was well practiced at having done plenty of his son's, his newborn daughters, his nieces and nephew as well. He smiled as he finished changing the nappy and got a smile from Daničle who was cuddling her stuffed toy rabbit. "Ok then." Peter said lifting Daničle up "Let's put you to bed." he put her in the cot that had been set up in his quarters and watched as she went to sleep, he let out a deep breath, two years earlier he'd promised Cecelia Anselmo that he'd look after Beatrice and now here he was with another exiled royal under his protection. Would that be his legacy he wondered? The father coming through all the time?

Marble Palace, Valtheim, 23rd March 2021

Peter stood looking out of the window of his study, he was enjoying a little bit of personal time reading one of his favourite stories - Watership Down, he glanced at where the book sat open on his desk just in front of Daničle's stuffed rabbit, she'd given it to him on the father's day just before she returned to Aquitaine. He could still remember seeing Daničle grow up watching her run around with Simon, Serenity and Beatrice plus occasionally Celine's daughter Yuki, Peter actually chuckled a little as he remembered that Lucinda Hadley had come along later.

"Peter." Celine said stepping into the study "We've got a problem."
"Please tell me Adriana's not been on social media again." Peter said
"She hasn't." Celine said "The IMS Poseidon's been hijacked by the Sorority of Materna."
"First I wish you had said that Adriana had been on social media again." Peter said "Second what are the Sorority doing hijacking a Rokkenjiman ship?"
"No idea yet." Celine said "The distress call received by our ships got cut off. They're on their way to the location now."
"Ok." Peter said he sighed "I want at least a ten kilometre perimeter around the Poseidon no ship or aircraft within it, isolate it and make sure Rokkenjima know what's going on please."

OOC - Anyone who wants to play hostages or ships picking up the distress call, offers of support etc is welcome to jump in. Anyone needing info on the Sorority give me a yell.

MV Herman Melville, Great Northern Ocean
3 nautical miles from IMS Poseidon

The Centralian-flagged fishing trawler was outside its designated fishing grounds.  This was not unusual, since its designated fishing grounds tended to be swarming with other Centralian-flagged fishing vessels, but it was technically illegal.  Captain Ulrik Svensgaard (okay, it was a pseudonym; his real name was Terrence Rawlins) stood impressively at the helm of his factory ship, looking out at the deck, which was, as usual, covered in fish and fish parts.  Svensgaard had been at sea for decades, one way or another, and he'd had many odd experiences over the years.  He kept glancing at the large liner off to starboard; there was something about it that made him uneasy.

"Cap'n!" the young sailor manning the radio called out, "You better come listen to this!"

Svensgaard started slightly at the sudden noise, then strode over and took the proffered headphones from the excitable youngster.

"...peat this is the IMS Poseidon declaring an emergency ship has been hijacked by the Sorority of Materna-"

The broadcast ended as suddenly as Svensgaard's last marriage, as if someone had switched off the bigger ship's radio - or cut its wires.  Svensgaard swore violently and barked an order to the helmsman to speed away as fast as humanly possible.  At that moment, Herman Melville's engines decided to have another fit, and sputtered and died.  Svensgaard swore again; now they would be stranded here until his crew could get the engines up and running again, and while he wasn't mixed up in this "Sorority of Materna" nonsense, he was engaged in illegal fishing far outside his designated zone, and he did not want to still be here when help arrived.

HTMS Victory, Great Northern Ocean
22 nautical miles from IMS Poseidon

As it happened, His Tytorian Majesty's Submarine Victory, one of the Tytorian Royal Navy's newest Remembrance-class attack submarines, had just surfaced for a breath of fresh air on its way to Queen Cecelia Military Base in Achkaerin when the distress call came in.  They had passed underneath Poseidon barely an hour or so ago, so the truncated message came as a bit of a surprise.  Captain Jacob Halverson reacted quickly, however, ordering his helmswoman to turn the boat around and head back in the direction of the liner with all possible speed.  Before submerging again, Captain Halverson sent a message of his own over a secure ICON channel.

This is a priority alert to all CSTO vessels in the Great Northern Ocean.  Civilian liner IMS Poseidon has fallen victim to an apparent high seas hijacking by agents of the "Sorority of Materna" terrorist organization.  My vessel is approximately 22 nautical miles from Poseidon and will be setting course for that location with all haste (live coordinates attached to this message).  Any other vessels in the vicinity are advised to lend assistance in bringing an end to this crisis with the urgency it deserves.

110km East of the IMPS Poseidon

The REMNS Chamwick was on yet another routine between Portworth and Achkaerin transporting some of the last few Achkaerin nukes for disposal. The carrier was on its first of such runs that had been publicised as a variety of training exercises for future humanitarian operations. Each run would see one of the carriers or amphibious warfare ships accompanied by a destroyer and pair of Frigates with often a sub or two milling around just in case. The crew of the Chamwick had set off expecting to pick up various pieces of hospital equipment and run it back to Portworth and Captain Frazer had been rather surprised when he had been briefed on his arrival about the extra bits and pieces of cargo he'd be carrying. The nuclear equipment had been loaded in secrecy and only the senior officers, three Red Legionnaires and a pair of Marine officers had been told of its presence.

The crew were rather enjoying the run, it had been the first chance to get the ship out on a long run and the aviators were enjoying the chance to get some flight time in away from the Illumic. This morning it was time for some routine patrols to run a few drills and a pair of Dragonskin fighters were about to intercept a returning Sea-Dragon when the distress call came through.

"Chamwick Actual this is Dragon One did you just get that distress call?" the pilot of the lead Dragonskin called in.

"Roger that Dragon One, we heard it." Onboard the ship Frazer was already sending word back to East Moreland and also to Rokkenjima. He was though now in a bit of a pickle and requested to speak to Admiral James Thompson   just as his instructions in Achkaerin had told him too should anything happen that was a problem. Frazer took the call in his ward-room.

"Admiral Thompson you know what we have onboard and you also will have been told of the situation. We may be the nearest military vessel and we have onboard Marines and some Red's, they may be of use but obviously we don't know the situation fully. What do you want us to do?"

"Captain" the Admiral understood the Captain's desire to help out but things needed to proceed. "The cargo needs to get back here ASAP. I want you to take a more Northern route avoiding the Poseidon however if requested by the flag state you may detach a Frigate to help in operations, stick some of your Marines and the Red's onboard and then haul ass back to East Moreland. You have discretion to reveal to your crew your mission if you think its needed."

"Thank you Admiral." Frazer ended the call and headed to the bridge, it was too early to perhaps declare what the cargo was but he called the people in the known together and briefed them. About forty minutes after the distress call had been heard Sergeant Lister of Red Legion was taking a helicopter ride to the Frigate "Melissa Gunningham" as he arrived with his two Red comrades and a further 10 Marines to supplement the small detachment on the Frigate he watched as they turned away and began heading towards the distress call.

Expeditionary Group 2, Great Northern Ocean
57km SSE of IMS Poseidon, Bearing 162°, Heading NbW/357° at 57 km/h

The INS Zharai had, following the conclusion of the last joint-CSTO summit, begun operations in the Great Northern Ocean, largely patrolling the region as it might've in it's home region. Accompanied by the destroyer INS Nikra and Frigates INS Khatar and Artik, its primary mission was, at the time, simply one of transit, making its way north to the QCMB in it's new Ally in Achkaerin. However, today would bring about a rather sudden turn of events, one which was of dire importance.

The bridge of the Zharai was rather quiet, at least for a naval vessel, but that was perhaps thanks in part to the small flotilla of vessels having finally cleared the Illumic after a brief refueling via a supply ship. From now until they reached their destination, it would be smooth sailing, or so they thought. Nonetheless, Rear Admiral Berai Shakan found himself remaining on the bridge for the time being, after all, just because it was unlikely that they would run into any issues did not excuse him from his duties. Then, it came. A distress call from a Rokkenjiman cruise ship, the Poseidon. Not long afterwards, a message from the HTMS Victory, which had also picked up the signal. Though he was cautious on the matter, he knew he had to do something, at the very least, which led to him ordering the taskforce under his command to alter its heading and follow, albeit at a safe distance, the ship. And as this was done, he would be certain to respond to the ICON communique send by Captain Halverson mere moments prior.

INEG-2 confirms report from HTMS Victory regarding the hijacking of Rokkenjiman Passenger Liner Poseidon by forces of the "Sorority of Materna" and is responding to its distress call. INEG-2 is moving to follow Poseidon for the time being and is prepared to lend a hand to all forces participating in ending this crisis. INEG-2 is currently 57km/30.8 nautical miles south southeast of IMS Poseidon at bearing 162 and will be changing its course from 357 to match that of the vessel. Recommend that measures be taken to reroute aerial and sea traffic away from a perimeter of at least 13 kilometers around the vessel. All crews are ready, willing, and able to perform the tasks needed in rescuing the vessel, once authorization has been given. INEG-2 will continue to follow the hijacked vessel until given orders to do otherwise.

Great Northern Ocean

Though the Achkaerinese surface vessels were still a slight distance away two Dragonite fighters had been dispatched from the groups carrier the INS Seonaid Ayanami they were flown by Captain Sarah Ryder and Lieutenant Gary Keats callsigns "Nightwing" and "Surfer" respectively, they reached the area of the Poseidon and began to circle the vessel it was in practice no different to CAP's that the pair had flown in their careers.

"Ok let's see what we've got." Sarah said as they banked around to observe the deck of the Poseidon "People up top presumably terrorists, apparently they don't care about us."
"So if they've got any SAM down there they're not going to waste them on us." Gary said "There's one other vessel in the perimeter looks civilian, getaway vessel?"
"Nightwing calling Nest." Sarah said flicking the radio
"Nest here." came the response from the carrier
"Visual inspection of Poseidon suggests hijack as plausible." Sarah said "Presumed terrorists observed on the top deck, no indication as to numbers. One other vessel cited within perimeter." Sarah said
"Received" said the coms officer on the carrier "Continue patrol."
"Have that." Sarah said

The INS Stardust was one of the frigates in the Achkaerinese surface group commanded by Captain Lindsay Gibson, like the rest of the surface group the ship was making its way towards the Poseidon Lindsay picked up the radio when it sounded.
"Captain Gibson" she said
"Fleet Captain Sullivan." Mark's voice answered "CAP have spotted what appears to be a civilian vessel in the vicinity of the Poseidon, identify nature of presence and move them on."
"Copy that, setting course now." Lindsay said

Tempest Fort, Achkaerin Special Forces HQ

Major General Neil Portman was a man who'd seen and done a lot in his career, he'd spent most of the day keeping tabs on his daughters progress - she was part of the team cycling pole to pole and then his phone had started ringing at first he'd thought he was imagining it but no someone really had hijacked a Rokkenjiman ocean liner in the middle of the northern ocean, Neil had raised an eyebrow at the Sorority of Materna being responsible, it was a name he'd not heard since the Marseilles crisis, it had been particularly bloody at the time special forces from several nations had been engaged in what were probably best described as raids targeted against key figures within that organisation. He looked at the Corporal who was manning the desk outside his office.

"I want Vermillion and Cerulean on their way out to the Seonaid Ayanami" he ordered
"Yes sir." the Corporal said "It's a little bit out of the ordinary isn't it?"
"Yes but they're trained for it." Neil said

Marble Palace, Round Table Room

If there was one person probably more on edge about the Sorority's reemergence it was Rion Ayanami, she'd spent all the years after the Marseilles crisis hunting the Sorority down, trying to catch the ones that had escaped in the last days of that terrorist regime, they'd made a decent amount of progress but still had a fair number outstanding. Rion was stood in the Round Table Room of the Marble Palace, it was her job to be there the second anything like this happened. She looked around as Peter walked in.
"Any guesses how this happened?" Peter asked
"A few." Rion said "I've requested ship specifications and crew details from Blue Star Line and we're getting security footage from the departure port."
"So what's their play?" Peter asked
"I don't know yet." Rion said
"Leave dealing with the Poseidon to the military." Peter said "You do what you do best see the whole board and tell me what's going on here."
"All right." Rion said

INS Firebreather, Great Northern Ocean

Fleet Captain Mark Sullivan was mulling over his options, he had confirmation of a Tytorian submarine and an Ikhan patrol in the area on their way to the Poseidon's vicinity and he'd sent the Stardust to take a look at the other ship spotted in the area, he looked at the coms officer who'd been trying for about half an hour now to raise the liner but with no success. Mark had been getting a near constant flow of information from the start of this and the longer this dragged on the more he was getting the sense that this was more than just a simple hijacking. Accessing the SCION interface on the 'chessboard' as they termed it he dispatched the message that he needed to.

IMS Poseidon

Miku Ogawa was by habit a very reclusive and paranoid individual, it was how she'd survived all these years. She was on the Poseidon not for a holiday but for a contract, she called herself a bounty hunter but in truth she was a cold blooded killer who enjoyed it. She sat on the bed in the cabin she'd been given for the voyage thinking about how she was going to kill her target this time when she heard the unmistakable 'pop' of gunfire. Getting up she went to the cabin door and looked through the peephole there was a steward lying face down on the floor outside the cabin, then came the sound of doors being kicked in and screams it sounded like a round up. Her eyes darted around the cabin, it was a pretty standard confined space wasn't it? Nowhere she could really hide, whoever was kicking down the doors would be at her door soon enough wouldn't they? Not enough time to make a phone call either, she shook her head as she positioned herself next to the door, hugging the wall she was caught like a rat in a trap wasn't she? Damned if she did and damned if she didn't.

MV Herman Melville, Great Northern Ocean
3 nautical miles from IMS Poseidon

Svensgaard swore even more violently.  Now there were what looked clearly like Achkaerinese jets overhead, which meant that this was rapidly becoming very much not the place to be at this moment.  The engines were still down, which meant that Herman Melville was a sitting duck if the Achkaerinese decided to paint her as the getaway vehicle for whoever this "Sorority of Whatsitcalled" was.

"Ramsay!" he barked into his radio handset, "Status report on the engines, stat!  This patch of water's liable to get real crowded real quick, and I don't want to still be here when it does."

"Not sure, cap'n!" came the reply, "If'n I didn't know better, I'd think somebody'd gone an' taken a sledgehammer to some o' this."

Svensgaard swore again.  Sabotage, on top of everything else?  This was going to be a long day.

HTMS Victory, Great Northern Ocean

Halverson brought his boat to periscope depth.  She really handled beautifully for such a large submarine, which he supposed wasn't all that surprising; she was practically brand new, after all.  Gazing through the periscope, Halverson gazed at Poseidon.  The liner looked undamaged from this side, though he realized that could change very quickly in a pinch.  Terrorists like the Sorority were not known for their subtlety.  Halverson turned to look at the wild card on the scene - a deep-sea fishing trawler with its transponder codes off, flying the Centralian flag and with the name Herman Melville painted on the side.  Halverson recognized it; Herman Melville had been involved in a rather nasty fishing rights dispute north of Floodwater a few years back when he'd still been in the Coast Guard.  He could still see scratch marks in the paint from when the trawler had tried ramming his cutter.  Assuming he was still captain, "Svensgaard" was an idiot, but not the type to sign on with matriarchal terrorists.  Halverson decided Herman Melville's presence was merely a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  There weren't any other ships in the area yet, though he figured it was only a matter of time.  He'd received the messages from the Ikhani taskforce and the Firebreather, so that was that.  Poseidon didn't look like it was moving quickly at all, which was odd; Halverson would have expected the terrorists to get the heck out of dodge as quickly as possible, but it was almost like they had cut the engines after seizing control of the ship.  Add to that, Herman Melville was evidently dead in the water altogether, which was even stranger, as "Svensgaard" wasn't the kind of guy to hang around the scene of a crime, real or imagined.  It was almost like the two wanted to be found here, and that was definitely quite fishy.

Halverson smiled at his own pun despite himself, and settled in to wait for the rest of the congregating ships to arrive.

IMS Poseidon

Miku was still standing with her back against the wall of the cabin, trying to control her breathing, she could hear the footsteps in the corridor and then she heard the speed of the footsteps increase and then a door being kicked in, she took a deep breath and carefull, quietly opened her cabin's door she was taking a huge risk in gambling that there were no armed agitators in the corridor, she was in luck that there weren't any, she darted down the corridor and ducked into a cabin that had already been searched by whoever these people were. In theory this was safe because there was no real logic to searching the same place twice. Now she set to work looking through this room's drawers, cabinets, cases and the two dead bodies on the floor searching for a phone. Eventually she found one in the jeans pocket of one of the bodies, biting her lip she closed her eyes trying to recall a number, it took her a few moments and then she dialed the number.

"Rion Ayanami." the voice on the other end said
"It's Miku Ogawa." Miku said
"How in the name of Helu..." Rion said
"I'm on the Poseidon." Miku said
"Something going on on the Poseidon?" Rion said
"Oh please." Miku said "The ship leaves Achkaerin and is hijacked by the look of it, of course you're working on it." there were a few moments of silence Rion was presumably weighing up her options, there was risk in trusting Miku that was for certain but Miku was more than willing to bet that right now Rion needed her just as much as she needed Rion, they were well and truly in this together now.
"All right." Rion's voice came back on the line after a few moments "The hijackers are the Sorority of Materna, we have no contact from them so we don't know what's going on. I need you to be our eyes and ears, recon the ship I don't want any surprises if we assault."
"Numbers and traps?" Miku said "Alright."

INS Stardust

The Stardust had gotten close enough to the Poseidon now to be able to make visual contact, on the bridge Lindsay was raising an eyebrow as she looked at the liner why wasn't it going like the clappers? It was going much slower. It wouldn't be long before everyone else converged on the area now, she turned her eyes from the Poseidon to the other surface ship and picked up the radio "Attention unidentified vessel." she said over the radio "This is the INS Stardust please state your name and purpose for being in the area. I say again identify your ship and purpose."

IMS Poseidon

Miku didn't much like this, as she carefully and stealthily made her way through the corridors of the liner, she had to be careful not to be seen and once or twice found herself ducking for cover as someone passed by up ahead. She had to stop for a few moments at the nearest map of the vessel to make sure she had the layout committed to memory. With it burned into her mind she made her way along the upper levels to a corridor that overlooked the main social area of the Poseidon, there it was, the passengers and crew held at gun point by about twelve people that she could see but she could also see one of the men carrying something in his hand, she took a photograph with the phone she had acquired and then moved away towards the stairs to the lower decks, as she moved she sent the photograph to Rion, and was replied to a few moments later with the message "Find the explosives." that told Miku all she needed to know about what she'd seen, the man in the photograph was holding a detonator, she had a bad feeling that she knew where to find the explosives, the engines or even the fuel tank. She made her way down into the depths of the liner.

The Marble Palace

Rion sighed as she looked at the photograph up on the wall screen, the man holding the detonator, they had a match on who it was, he was Matthieu Bescond a somewhat senior figure within the Sorority , he had been assigned the designation Ten of Spades during the Marseilles crisis, so they had confirmation that this was a hijacking by the Sorority but even so what was the aim here? They weren't making demands, they weren't behaving like it was a hostage situation and they weren't moving at full speed. Something was definitely up but what? What was the point of it? What was the card that the Sorority thought they were holding? What were they achieving? All they'd done was divert ships already in the area...her eyes widened, that was it wasn't it?

"Get me the INS Normandy" Rion said
