GOVERNMENT
The Republic of Hassfurt follows a constitution in which democracy is held to be extremely important.
The government is made up of three main parts.
1. The Senate
2. The People's Assembly
3. The Consuls
The Nation has a 200 seat Senate. 100 Seats of this are reserved for those in receipt of a Republican Service Medal. These are given to anyone declared through either excellence or long service to have benefitted the Republic, for example anyone serving five years in the military earns one as do sporting personalities on reaching certain landmarks. All medal awards are approved by the Senate every December. The Senate is responsible for voting on the first drafts of all legislation given by a Consul. Any legislation not passing is returned to the Consuls and may be redrafted using amendments put forward by the Senate.
Any legislation passed by the Senate goes to the People's Assembly. This body is made up of fifty members of the public randomly selected once a year, twenty five members are then picked by each Consul. Any legislation failed here returns to the Senate with amendments. Any legislation passing twice through Senate automatically reaches the Consuls.
Finally there are two Consuls. These are serving four year terms but elected on a staggered two year basis. For any legislation to pass it must be approved by both Consul or if unable to is placed on referendums given out every January. Rules state that the two Consuls may not come from the same political party. To stop this happening by tricks if a person has ever stood for election representing a party this is classed as still being a member even if they have switched or left the party.
