Ardian settlement at the „Argentum Montis“ (720-1000)
Historians think Argemontese history started some time around 720. The oldest document mentioning a settlement at „Argentum Montis“ is a letter of an Ardian settler which he wrote to his brother back in the empire. The „Argentum Montis“ today called la Kapo was filled with precious metals at that time, especially silver could be found all around it. Naturally when these news reached the Ardian Empire a constant influx of new settlers was assured. Everyone who was able to pay for a place on a boat, or even a whole boat tried to get to Argemonto (as long as he was not scared of the dangerous voyage.)

The Silver Princes (1000-1240)
Since it was costly and dangerous to get to Argemonto it were members of patrician families who soon dominated trade an transport from and to Argemonto. Some younger members of less relevant patrician families even moved to Argemonto permanently. In some families it even became a sort of tradition to get rid of unfavored sons by sending them to Argemonto along with a few slaves.
From these young, educated men of noble descend an economic and political elite emerged: The so called Silver Princes. Around the year 1000 the families started to cut the ties to their dynasties in the empire, choosing new names and sigils.
While this elite had consolidated power for their kind, Argemonto remained in a state of constant conflict and shifting alliances between the families. Kidnapping, murder, sabotage and other crimes became normal between the rivaling families.

First Centralisation of Power

In 1240 Ignacio Kandaliaro became head of his family after his father was murdered by an assassin of the Kolumno Family. Instead of continuing the blood feud between the most powerful families which had raged for decades, he decided to make peace with them. Through generous concessions including trade privileges and silver mines he achieved a solid alliance with the Kolumnos. The pact was sealed by a marriage. In 1242 a slave revolt broke out. Many members of noble families were killed. Ignacio and his wife were able to flee the city along with some of their riches before the slaves could capture them. While Argemonto fell into a state and anarchy, Ingacio arrived in the empire. After explaining the situation a legion was send along with Ignacio. When the commander of the legion disappeared on sea, Ignacio himself assumed control over the legion probably by bribing leading officers and promising them shares of silver mines. Once they arrived the revolting slaves were massacred and the prisoners they had kept hoping to ransom them to the empire were freed. Ignacio had now gained the trust of the Empire and of the noble families in Argemonto.


Kandaliaro Rulers

Ignacio I. (1242-1280)
While Ignacio Kandaliaro never had an official title that gave him the authority to rule Argemonto he was so respected an influential that he could still do it. He formed an unofficial government called the small council, consisting of the heads of all important Argemontese families. From now on conflicts between families should be settled here under the moderation of Ignacio.

Under his rule Argemonto expanded its economic influence in the region dramatically. Before the small city state colony had made itself completely dependent from the Empire. It had specialized solely on the production of silver and jewellery. Exporting almost exclusively to the Empire. Now trade deals with surrounding kingdoms and city states were made and the diversification of the Argemontese economy was started. Especially the production of agricultural goods grew during this period. Argemonto cleared around 85% of its woods solely for wine production. Basic food products were still imported.


Fernando 1280-1323
After Ignacios death, his nephew Fernando took over. Under his influence the small council was officially acknowledged as the government of the City of Argemonto by the Empire. As head of the council he became governor of the now established imperial province of Argemonto (lat. Argentumontis). Trade Relations with neighbouring settlements were further intensified, which slowly lead to the creation a new language. Local dialects merged with Latin and the first proto-Argemontese language came to exist. However it was almost solely spoken by the lower class and by traders. The official language remained Latin. However this event marks an important step in the history of Argemontese culture.

In the later years of Fernando‘s rule a new diplomatic system emerged. Neighbouring villages and towns were put under protection of Argemonto and of the empire. Argemonto became the door to the imperial trade in its region. New and better oversea trade routes and more reliable ship designs allowed even more export to imperial mainland. The city‘s economy flourished.


Ignacio II.
When Ignacio II. became governor of Argemonto the province was in good shape. The first years of his rule were peaceful. In 1327 an economic crisis caused by a drought struck the empire. Luxury products were on low demand and the Argemontese economy declined. When in 1329 all silver deposits in and around the city were depleted and the Empire demanded Argemontese grain to be delivered to the capital, the administration became desperate. Ignacio decided to resist the demand and keep the grain to feed the local population.
The Emperor deposed him as soon as the news reached him. On 4th of January in 1330 Ignacio declared independence from the Empire and from now on ruled as Ignacio I. King of Argemonto.


Civil War against the Empire

After the Declaration of Independence, Ignacio quickly assembled an army of mercenaries and dug in at the Argemontese coast, waiting for the Imperial Army to attack. However the Kingdom of East Moreland saw an opportunity to further expand into northern lands. They declared war on Argemonto and invaded. Ignacio now had to split his attention and sent his army south leaving only a small garrison on the coast. Considering the Empire was a bit weakened hoped the Morelanders could be defeated before the imperial fleet could even arrive. On (date to be added) the Argemontese mercenaries and the Morelandish army met on the fields of leading to a battle. At the same time the imperial fleet under the command of (name to be added) arrived Argemontese shores, swiftly took the capital and proceeded to loot the surrounding area. The battle against the Morelanders led to a Pyrrhic victory. The Morelanders regrouped in (place to be added) while Ignacio II heard of the news from the capital. Desperate and angry he force marched his troops back. A huge part of the force had already deserted when the army arrived at the capital. The vastly outnumbered and starving remains of Ignacios army were offered peaceful capitulation. Ignacio rejected the offer leading to his death on the battlefield. Since then Ingacio II is an Argemontese national hero.

After the capital was secured, the imperial troops proceeded to March south hoping to restore order there. On the forced met on. The battle led to a crushing defeat of the Morelanders. The following peace treaty also called the treaty of blah led to the annexation of blah blah blah, territories which were recently conquered by East Moreland, resulting in today’s Argemontese borders.


After a brief episode of independence the following centuries of Argemontese foreign policy were dominated by the empire.

After the clearly lost civil war the empire did not show mercy. The term of Argentum Montis/ Argemonto was abolished trying to eradicate nationalist tendencies. Former Argemontese territory was put under direct control of two governors appointed by the emperor. All Kandaliaros were slaughtered or exiled

The Factions


Name: Räterepublik Herrenbucht (Soviet Republic of Herrenbucht)

Background information: The Soviet Republic of Herrenbucht was proclaimed by Georg Gasan shortly after the riots in Wateringas broke out. Most labour unions and socialist militias gave their support for the SRH immediately. In a matter of hours the militias overran the military base in Wateringas, which they had infiltrated beforehand and started conquering the surrounding coastal areas. The SRH effectively rules half of the Herrenbuchtian population right now. Most political decisions inside the SRH are made by the quickly appointed government and its chairman Georg Gasan. Local administration is left to military councils composed of militia soldiers and former soldiers of the Ducal army who switched sides.

Military information: While SRH has manpower it lacks good equipment. During "the miracle of Wateringas" the revolutionaries managed to seize control of the Wateringas military base but much of the equipment was damaged or even sabotaged by the Ducal soldiers to make it useless. Also a big part of the stationed airforce managed to escape to the south. The SRH was able to achieve its initial victories through guerilla attacks with a massive infantry, but they have no possibility to fight in the gigantic valleys of the south east. They are able to throw men into the fight but what they need is equipment an leaders with military experience. Their massive bonus is that they control the coast and most of the navy, therefore they can always receive supplies.

Background information: The Republic of Herrenbucht was proclaimed a few hours after the proclamation of the SRH. The movement that proclaimed it is a group of liberal politicians who call themselves the "Freidenkerkreis" (Circle of Free Thinkers). While they initially supported the strikes they were shocked by the proclamation of the SRH since they had a liberal democracy as the new system for Herrenbucht in mind and did not want to side with socialist revolutionaries. They have broad popular support in the northerns regions of Herrenbucht and managed to conquer a big chunk of Herrenbucht without any bloodshed. 


Military information: The Republic only has a small army consisting of a few illoyal members of the Ducal Army and citizen militias. A possibility to improve the Republics chances for a victory is situated in the middle of its territory. The military headquarters of Melkheim offer massive stockpiles that could be used to arm the citizens of the republic, however the forces are not able to crack the fortress. While the soldiers inside the headquarters remained loyal they did not attack the new Republic that surrounds them now yet. Without massive help the Republic will probably be crushed by one of the other factions. The socialists already declared war on them and would probably launch an offensive to take the rest of the coast and then invade the northern territories. The Duxists might use the troops stationed in Melkheim, as soon as they decide what to do the with Republic.

Background information: After the government lost control over the Wateringas area, Duke Philipp declared martial law. The people loyal to him call themselves the Duxists. Technically the Duxist regime is the legitimate government of Herrenbucht, however it is questionable if their claim will be taken seriously. The Duxists currently control the rural and mountainous areas in the south west of Herrenbucht.

Military information: Duke Philipp still controls the lion share of his military. The 3rd, 4th and 5th army were able to dig in along the rivers Weltel and Heese, however they have one problem: They do not control any coastal areas, therefore they have problems receiving supplies. If all offensives against the revolutionaries fail the Duke's troops might be starved out. The 2nd Army in Melkheim is an encircled and awaits orders, however all channels of contact have been disrupted by the Republicans. The Duke can only hope that they will make the right decision and attack the city, although they probably would not do this without qualms.




The Situation

Süßmann became nervous. His superiors expected him to report an absolute success of this mission, but this lady seemed really determined. This would probably make things more difficult, but the revolution was still possible. All labour unions were fully prepared to strike for months. The revolutions needs to be started soon with or without weapons from Kaitaine.

"I accept this proposal. We will need to reach Herrenbuchtian arsenals as soon as possible then. I think we will have efficient ways to convinve the soldiers as well. Some of our soldiers will be able to enter Herrenbucht immediately. We have some of our men stationed in the ports, but we cannot conceal the immigration of too many. Once the revolution has started and we have seized control over the coast everyone can enter who is willing to fight for our cause. The last thing we need to worry about are the potential allies of the Duke. But we can discuss this in a separate agreement once the civil war has started. You will hear from us. Goodbye....Comrade"

Süßmann then left the stadium heading back to Herrenbucht.

The day of the marriage has come. Both the Ducal Palace and St.Henrik's Cathedral have been prepared to host the delegations from all around Mundus. After entering Wateringas at the airport, the guest would be brought to St.Henrik's Cathedral immediately, where they would be welcomed by the bride, Princess Elena, the groom, Prince Laurenz and the father of the bride, Duke Philipp.

The plaza in front of the cathedral was already crowded by Herrenbucht's high nobility and by some reporters handpicked by the Duke himself, to ensure that there would only be good press. The plaza itself was guarded by the finest men of the Ducal Guard.

Suddenly Elena heard a sharp rhytmic noise through the ubiquitous mumbling on the plaza. The noise came from one of the back alleys leading to the cathedral. Of course her father decided to dispatch a contingent to accompany the guest on their way from the main road to the cathedral. He used every opportunity to show off Herrenbucht's military. Although she disliked this posturing she felt like she has to accept it as a part of the Herrenbuchtian mentality.

Now Elena could finally see the origin of the noise. The Ducal Guard contingent marched onto the plaza and behind them the first foreign guests arrived. Everyone turned into their direction. Like the Duke himself most of the Herrenbuchtian guests were overwhelmed with proud by the fact that Herrenbucht hosted so many international guests. Although Herrenbuchtians love their isolation, an event of this scale now and then is something very exciting for them.

Philipp gave a friendly push to his daughter. Then she and her groom moved towards the arriving delegation together. Philipp stayed in the backround. Although he is a really attention seeking nature he wanted his daughter to be in the focus today. After all she is his heir.

"I'd prefer having wargames together, since we will already have a military parade in Herrenbucht really soon. Of course we would be happy to welcome one of your battaillons as well.
Now that we have come to an agreement we should define our future alliance more specifically. The most diplomatic offer would be a simple defensive pact, but my Sovereign asked me to find out if New Colovia would be ready to sign a treaty that would guarantee help in agressive wars as well..." The Minister seemed to get a little nervous, fearing that he might not be able to fulfill the task that he was given. "I know this might seem a bit keen, but my Sovereign wants to be sure that all of his 'ambitions' are backed.

Finn Süßmann had been member of the Roter Untergrund (Red Underground) for fifteen years. Several weeks ago he became the newest member of the central council of this secret socialist organisation. He was eager to serve his comrades and their common cause, and therefore he was overwhelmed with joy when he was given the task to contact the spokesperson from Kaitaine.

His journey on a ferry from Herrenbucht to East Moreland had been without complications although he really feared being suspicious in the eyes of the Herrenbuchtian border guards.

When Finn entered the arena complex he searched for the ticket office. A young man stood behind the counter. Most guests already had their ticket so Finn didn't have to wait long.

Trying to conceal his strinking Herrenbuchtian accent as best as possible he ordered the ticket for Simon Yates. The young man rose an eyebrow, but offered Finn the ticket without hesitation: "Enjoy the game!"

Finn left the ticket office searching for the number he found on the ticket. He took his seat, and looked to his left and asked "Are you Alice? I'm the delegate from Herrenbucht"

Every sale of Herrenbuchtian arms needs to be authorized by CADA. To issue an authorization CADA needs to consider if the potential trade partner poses a threat to Herrenbucht and/or its allies, or if the potential trade partner could pose a threat to its own population. This is done with regards to the laws considering arm ownership and the practice of these laws.

CADA also controls international franchising of Herrenbucht's defense industry as well as foreign defense industry franchising in Herrenbucht. This is done to ensure quality standards, protect military technology and to protect Herrenbuchtian industry from illegal competition

The Ducal Guard consists of 2000 infantrymen organized in two 1000 men regiments. Namely the "Wachregiment Prinz Philipp" and "Wachregiment Prinz Markus".
The guard's members are picked by the Duke and his general staff from the most promising officers between 20-30. Although they are used for ceremonial purposes they are excellent soldiers, due to intensive training. Skills that are part of the standard training of a Ducal Guard are hand-to-hand combat, precision shooting with pistols and rifles and the most unique part of their training: Sword fight with two handed swords.

The tradition of two handed sword fights as a training discipline was never abolished due to the entertaining public sword fights that are done for training and as a sport.
Sadly the sword fight is not that common in most other countries as a discipline, so there is no possibility to test their sword skills on an international scale.

With the Duke not willing to give government offices to socialists and the Nationallliberale faction being to progressive to cooperate with the right parties, the old government will probably not be able to pass any laws. The only alternative left for a government that can be democratically legitimized would be if the conservative factions make big concessions or if the left factions can force the Duke to create a left mid government by having a convincing majority in the Bürgersenat. Such a government would have dramatic consequences for Herrenbucht, as it has been a long time since there was a progressive government in charge


The government stated that its urbanization program in the reservates is working excellently and that the inhabitants in the reservates were reall cooperative. He promised great progresses in the coming months. Although some sources report violent resettlements and genocidal tendencies in the acting police forces and military units, Ruprecht von Texburg explained that these rumors have nothing to do with the truth and are just propaganda of the opposition.

A POLITICAL LEAFLET OF AN UNDEGROUND ORGANISATION: THE LEAFLET WAS DISTRIBUTED EVEN INTERNATIONALLY

Through an anonymous informant our newspaper learned of a horrible incident in one of the evacuated reservates. He told us of a horrible massacre that was provoked by the police and commited by the military. Our informant who claims to be part of the police himself, tells us of at least a hundred victims.

The horror went even further when he explained us that he has qualified suspicion that the massacre was planned. He reported that there were not enough vehicles for the villagers in the first place and that the logic and brutal consequence was the death of many people.

He also sent us photographs of corpses. While we do not want to share the material for obvious reasons we can ensure you that our experts have proof that these photographs are real.

With this article we want to inform all Herrenbuchtians of the atrocities commited by our own government, and we want to inform the world and hope to receive help in our mission. This case needs investigation and the evacuation has to be halted immediately as long as we cannot be sure that such atrocities will not be repeated

We demand immediate resistance from all citizens of Herrenbucht. These crimes reflect on all of us.

ETSCHNU, GREMDON RESERVATE


The police officers entered the village. They were awaited by a big group of civilian carrying all the things they were able to pack since noon. They did not talk much. Some of them cried some of them remained silent but the overall atmosphere was depressing. The policemen left their cars to lead the population into the transports.

While Jochen gave orders to the villagers he realized that the villagers were not only sad. When patrolling past the queues he felt looks that expressed pure hatred. While trying to calm down a woman that had dropped a vase and was desperately trying to recollect the pieces of the family heirloom, he realized noise from the front of the left queue. A man was trying to carry too much luggage on the transport but refused to give up on his commodities. The verbal fight became more and more agressive and now other villagers also complained. The policemen were getting nervous now. Jochen had hoped that this would become a calm work day. He was proven wrong. As more and more villagers pushed into the direction of the policemen at the front of the queue one of the officers drew his gun and pointed it at the mass. Only a few villagers moved backwards seeing the gun. Most became only more agressive. Now all of them drew their guns: No reaction. At the moment they were almost encircled by villagers a shot was fired. For a moment there was silence. Followed by great noise and screaming. The villagers moved forward trying to disarm the policemen. Several shots were fired. Motors were started. Jochen ran away from the citizens, grabbing his walkie talkie. He searched for the right frequence and screamed into the radio "Where are you? You heard the shots! Get over here!" The answer came quickly "We're on our way. I told you this would go wrong"

A few moments later military vehicles rushed into the scenery. Machine gun fire started. Jochen expected it to be warning shots into the air, but was shocked to see the villagers fall as they were butchered by the unit. Jochen screamed at them and ordered them to stop, but the infantrymen leaving the vehicles ignored him and pushed the police officer away. They proceeded shooting at the mass arbitrarily. Jochen could not see any system in their procedure. They suddenly stopped and the people that had tried to hide or yielded and had not been shot were dragged into the middle of the bloody street, cuffed and pushed into the transports. Jochen now realized that there was just enough space for them. This was no accident.

DUCAL PALACE OF HERRENBUCHT 9:47am

Duke Philipp is seated in a big chair in his office, in front of him Hermann von Secru, Minister of State

"I know we are taking a risk, but the sake of our nation is beyond these matters. It is the perfect way to revive the national enthusiasm of our nation. It worked hundreds of years ago why shouldn't it now? Also, the socialists are defeated and wouldn't dare to start new revolts. We punished the criminals extremely hard and their example terrorized the remaining ones into resignation. Now it's time to strike against our other enemy. We have left them alone for too long, if we don't act now they might expect our move and prepare themselves. Don't underestimate them, like my ancestors did"

"But your majesty...the treaty, this would be political suicide. Disrespecting the Treaty of Ucklack this way could be seen as very problematic by foreign states"

"Political suicide? If everything goes as planned you won't have any opposition to worry about soon enough. Furthermore the world wouldn't dare meddling in our affairs. The Nalachians don't have any protector. So what are you waiting for? I gave the order, now execute it!

"Yes your majesty. But what are we supposed to do if we face resistance?"

"You should consult your most honorable colleague, the Minister of War then. You may leave now, Lord Minister"



2 HOURS LATER: ETSCHNU, A NALACHIAN VILLAGE IN THE GREMDON RESERVATE

Hikda had almost arrived. The traffic was worse than normal and she saw more trucks than usually on the street, even some military vehicles. She thought they would be on their way to a military exercise, or a wargame or anything like those thing Duke Philipp had ordered to show of his boys. She was a Nalachian, working outside the reservate, but still lived in her parent's village. Her day in the city had been a really stressfull one. Herrenbuchtian's in the west could be a really annoying sort of people. While Nalachians that had assimilated were a common view in Herrenbuchtian cities and racism against them was, if even, a minor problem, Nalachians living in the reservates were treated with little respect and distrust. Hikda herself experienced this when people saw her tribal tattoos. Disrespectful commons and awkward looks had become normal for her, but she was not irritated by this and kept being proud about her heritage. She took the exit to her village and as she came closer she saw that the police was in her village. But not regular tribal police. Herrenbuchtian police had entered their village. Normally they would only drive through the reservate if they use the highway, so this was new. When Hikda came closer she even saw soldiers standing a bit away from the police, but still near the village. What was this all about? The policemen were fighting with the village elder. Hikda parked her car right in front of the village in the middle of the street and went to the police officers.

"What is this all about? What is happening"

Instead of the officers the elder answered: "They want us to move, they want to urbanize this region. They say it was ordered by the Duke"

"But this is our land! Your Duke's ancestor signed a treaty which guarantees our autonomy, why are you here? Why are these soldiers here, you have no right to-"

"Calm down lady, okay?" Now the officer answered "We are just executing orders, and these soldiers are only here to ensure that there will be no violence. Our work is done here. You understood, old man? You have time to pack up until this evening. Then we will return to bring you into a temporary camp. After that you will be free to apply for full citizenship in Herrenbucht or to leave.

The Officers left together with the soldiers. The village elder just stood there staring at the ground. Hikda felt the tears running up her eyes. Her world collapsed
