First Major Shake-up of God-Emperor Hira's reign

Avatar Octavia Announces Massive Increase In Oversee Church Presence

Last night, Avatar Octavia held a press conference in the Court of Blades. The press conference was called to outline the first of the what the government is calling the New Order. Octavia explained vaguely that the New Order was the God-Emperor's promise to reform the Church of Crissaar and expand its international presence. She promised that in the coming days more information about the New Order would be detailed, but that the first of these would be what is being termed the Mundus Salvation- a massive increase in missionaries overseas.

Avatar Octavia was chosen to oversee this new effort due to her own missionary work in addition to her close relationship with the Matriarchal Order of Black. She will work as the go between the Order and the God-Emperor to ensure that his will is carefully followed. The Sirens being chosen to undertake this historic assignment are the best of the Order. In addition the Order is beginning a new wave of Proselytizer recruitment- non-church members that participate in missionary work. Proselytizers have mostly fallen out of use, but the Church is hoping that the promise of seeing Mundus will entice young and passionate believers.

Quote from: Part of Octavia's Speech
With the Ascension of a new God, the Hallowed Dominion of Crissaar enters a new age. Our God, Hira, has been appointed by Crissaar to lead us. It is Crissaar's will that this new age of the Dominion not only by symbolic, but come with great change. A New Order shall rise in the Church of Crissaar.

The Church is facing new crisis and obstacles. The resurgence of the Nir'Shado shows that the age of peace our nation has enjoyed is threatened by heretics. The time of division between Helgara and the Ionia mainland must come to an end. And blasphemy must be wiped out. Already Church members have been dispatched to deal with the Nir'Shado, and these Blood Sisters that lead them. It is true that Inquisitors have also been sent to Ionia. But true believers of Crissaar have no need to fear, it is only the heretics that should worry. This heresy will be wiped out, and the Nir'Shado will once again take their rightful place, in history books.

Our God-Emperor has spoken, and by the end of his reign, the Dominion shall be a leader in the international community, willing to work alongside our neighbors. We are all children of Mundus, and it is long past time that we acted like it. For too long have Crissaar's chosen hide themselves from the world. For too long have we ignored the troubles outside our borders. No longer. If the Church does not adapt to the modern world, it will die.

For too long have the Helgarans hoarded our place as Crissaar's chosen people. This will no longer be true. Our Sirens shall travel to every corner of Mundus to ensure that word of Crissaar is heard far and wide. It is time the world turned to the Black Prison and bowed to the most holy. Our Emperor, in his infinite wisdom, has chosen me to lead this new effort. This will be the first of the New Order. Alongside the Matriarchal Order of Black, I will ensure that the sight of our robed missionaries is commonplace in every nation.

The wheels of time are spinning and our God has spoken. The old Church will burn to light our prayer fires, and from it's hallowed remains, a New Order rises.

Helgaran Intelligence

The Headquarters of the SERAPHIM, the central intelligence agency of Helgara

Helgara lacks a standing military force of any kind. It instead relies on its extremely well-funded and highly trained intelligence agency, SERAPHIM, to deal with any and all threats, both domestic and foreign. Because of this, Helgara has one of the largest and most powerful covert bureaus in the Mundus. A number of the more militant members of the Church of Crissaar work alongside SERAPHIM, leading to a complicated power structure. Despite this, SERAPHIM is not official affiliated with the Church, making it one of the only non-religious institutions within the nation. Despite the fact that Helgara has chosen to remained isolated for much of the modern era, SERAPHIM still manages a massive network of spies and covert agents across Mundus. With the nation shifting to an increasing international presence, foreign intelligence has become a forefront of the Helgaran nation.

Convention Centre / Re: Festival of Sail 2018
« on: August 26, 2018, 11:12:29 PM »
The Helgaran fleet sailed approached the festival wary. It was a small fleet, three junk ships (the Nightrunner, Red Fang, and Shuri) and two turtle ships (Storm's Fury and Ki'ly). While the nation lack a national navy, it possessed a number of ancient ships that were in almost perfect condition. Upkeep on the ships was minimal due them to rarely seeing use. Even though this was an unofficial diplomatic mission, the Church thought it best to show of the naval pride of Helgara. The ships were towed most of the way by a commercial liner, and then left to sail the last leg on their own.

God-Emperor Hira was aboard the Nightrunner. He had miraculously been able to travel with almost no other high ranking officials. They only one he could not have argued with was Avatar Octavia, who was one of the few Helgarans to have experience in the international community. She was aboard the Ki'ly, she had brought a number of research material, including a number of text on the Moreland religion. There were also a handful of translators, Sirens who had learned local languages from their missionary work abroad. In addition, the Council had insisted upon an honor guard. So fifty Blade Masters number among the various ships. They wore the traditional white robes of Paladins, along with blades at their sides. Hira had thought it prudent to ensure that the warriors were distinct and easy to spot, hoping to avoid international incident.

Truth be told, Hira was glad they were arriving soon. Despite the Helgaran people being islanders, he had never adapted well to the water. Even now, with the sway of the ship, he could barely stand still. Not exactly dignifying for a god. Hira had been warned, because they were abroad traditional vessels, naval histories would be quite interested in talking with the Helgaran party. For this reason, there was some professor with them as well. Like Octavia, Hira had ensured that the professor was abroad another ship as well- the Storm's Fury if he remembered correctly.

Helgaran intelligence said that the Achkaerin Emperor usually attended the festival as well. The Azurewinds. Intelligence also said that the Moreland King often met with a number of foreign dignitaries, although in a more casual sense. It was strange to Hira, these men were his equals now. Leaders of two of the most powerful nations in Mundus. They had been raised in a life of luxury and royalty. Hira, on the other hand, had slept in gutters and alleyways for the first few years of his life. He eat scrapes from trashcans and stole if he couldn't find any. He had been lucky the church had taken him in, other orphans were not so lucky. He hadn't been to Ionia since his adoption, which was solely based on his pure Helgaran blood. Hira wasn't keen to return, even if the Ionia of today was vastly different then the one of twenty years ago.

Hira cleared his mind. His thoughts had been scattered like this since his ascension. The trials had far more of an effect on him then he cared to admit. Focus. Hira took a deep breath of the salty sea air and readied himself. The handful of Blade Masters at his back sensed this and also steeled themselves. Now was the time to learn this so-called art of diplomacy.

Holy Shakespeare Company's Historic Production of Hamlet Brings In Massive Crowds

The first of the HSC's new series- Hamlet

The Holy Shakespeare Company continues the tradition of one of the most influential Helgaran playwright's William Shakespeare. Despite this the HSC has been facing declining audience sizes, last season for the first time ever they didn't make a net profit on their season. This lead to the old artistic director being fired, and Reese Hightower being hired. While Reese is a veteran actor of the HSC, cast in a handful of productions, he is mostly known for his own production company known as the Ionian Contemporary, noted for its commitment to modern experimental theatre. Reese' announced a hallmark season for the HSC, and each production will feature a new twist. The female-led Hamlet is the first of this new season, and opened this weekend. Hamlet was set to run til the end of September, but has already been extended two more weekend, due to already being completely sold-out. This is already the HSC's most profitable production in recent history, and given the early ticket sales of the shows later in the season, this trend is only set to continue.

Artistic critics are in a bit of a disagreement over the production. The Ionian Artistic Journal said the gender-bending of the titular role has "breathed new life into one of the oldest still produced plays." While the Helgara Observer claimed that "the casting of Hamlet bended, although never truly broke, the story, a bit a little too much at points." Despite this, almost all are in agreement that the production is extremely well done, and as our own Helen Viso, said in her review, "the HSC has stuck gold. This production of Hamlet is a benchmark for what skilled artists are capable of, and once again shows why Helgara is the capital of theatre in Mundus. Reese Hightower has proven that his youth and daring to re-invent the Holy Shakespeare Company are well-placed. And, I for one, am already extremely excited to see the next production."

But not only the high class will get to enjoy Hamlet. Given the finical success, the HSC has announced a number of free performances for entire season that will show to the less finically stable and the youth. In the announcement, Reese stated, "Art is not, and should never be, only for those that can afford it. Our commitment is to support, entertain, and challenge people in all walks of life, be they old, young, rich, poor, Ionian, or Helgaran. With these showings, we hope to inspire a new group of theatre goers, as well as the next generation of artists."

Not everyone is happy though. A number of conservatives are calling for a boycott of the HSC, mostly focused on the fact that Reese is a trans man. Despite this, the boycott has gained little traction. The Church's acceptance of transgender issues has made Helgara one of the forerunners when it comes to trans rights. As Avatar Octavia has said many times, "The gender-fluidity of Crissaar is well-documented, and celebrated. Why should we as a nation not celebrate individuals who, are not only living their most authentic lives, but also are following in the footsteps of the most holy? Helgara as a nation has already fought these issues, and the acceptance of Crissaar is clear."

The next show of the HSC's season is Julius Caesar. The production will not feature a single HSC company member, and is instead a co-production with the Native Ionian Theatre Institute (NITI), known for it's commitment to casting and telling the stories of the Native Ionians.

Roleplay Moderator's Office / Re: Nuclear Weapons
« on: August 26, 2018, 02:17:38 PM »
Just a question to see if I understand the ruling, this means that the odd nuclear weapon could still appear on occasion, for instance a nation is in the middle of disarming but a situation arises where they might still use the threat of their arsenal, or a rouge nation/ terrorist group may get their hands on an old nuclear warhead, is that correct?

The Church of Crissaar is divided into 8 (originally 9 before the Nir'Shado were disbanded) Blocs. The Blocs act as independent factions with their own sovereignty. The Blocs are only answerable to the Council of 13 and the God-Emperor. Both the God-Emperor and Council of 13 also settle disputes between Blocs. The Blocs sometimes have sub-factions within them known as Sects. Most of the time, Sects are militant or elite warriors.

The God-Emperor is the 13th member of the Council of 13. The Emperor may weigh in on debates, but is bared from voting unless there is a tie. The God-Emperor has the power to issue decrees, which carry the weight of a decision made by the Council of 13. The Emperor traditionally uses their position to lead and direct the Council of 13, and is the symbolic figurehead ruler of Helgara. As such, the Emperor is often responsible for deciding foreign policy and leading the nation in times of crisis.

The Council of 13, when united, is the only group that wields power equivalent to the God-Emperor. Majority decisions are the bases for new laws and regulations within the nation. They also have the power to strike down an imperial decree. If conflict arises between two Blocs, the Council acts as arbitrators. Many Blocs and high ranking church officials appeal to various Avatars in order to curry favor. Any temple and official that does not belong to a specific Bloc answers directly to the Council, for example Guardian's Rest only allows monks who have not joined a Bloc to permanently stay. Avatars may chose Maars to serve as their personal eyes and ears, doing whatever is required by their Avatar.

The Holy Temple of Light is the oldest of the Blocs. The Holy Temple of Light was once a physical temple, but was destroyed during the War of Red. Since then the Temple has become a symbolic place. Members of the Temple all belong to the Path of Light and are devoted to the ideals of generosity and kindness. Because of this, the Temple holds great favor with the general citizens of Helgara, and its power base is in the Ionian mainland.

The Inquisition is a shadowy and infamous group. It is their duty to root out heresy and fight blasphemy. Often times Inquisitors will join other Blocs, and they are the only ones who can do so. Most Inquisitors are trained in the arts of persuasion and espionage, but lack combat training. Since the Mundus Convention on Universal Rights, the tactics of Inquisitors have slightly changed. They rely on physical torture and cruel punishments far less, and have shifted to more psychological versions. Inquisitors are said that, given enough time, they could break and reshape the mind of anyone.

Crissaar Undivided is famed for its legacy of taking members from both the Path of Light and Shadows and encouraging them to embrace both aspects of Crissaar. As a faction, they are extremely decentralized, its members free to act of their own volition. As such, members of Crissaar Undivided are known to randomly appear and offer their expertise in a number of situations.

Crissaar's Eyes is an extremely small Bloc. The Bloc's importance comes from its leaders- the Oracles. The Oracles partake in naturally occurring hallucinogens and their visions are said to be messages directly from Crissaar. In the past the Oracle's had extreme influence, but as society advanced, they gained a reputation as frauds. Despite this some still hold great reverence to the Oracles, and seek their advice in time of personal strife.

The Nir'Shado were disbanded after some internal strife between the Helgara islands and the Ionia mainland.

The Matriarchal Order of Black's Ionian Expeditionary Force Begins to Arrive in Ionia

As a combat mission, the Order has traded their black robes for red ones.

Following the decree of the Church of Crissaar, a number of Blade Masters and Night Sisters are set to arrive in Ionia to help deal with the Nir'Shado threat. Today the first of these warriors arrive in the port of Hamantra. The Ionian Expeditionary Force was just created by the Matriarchal Order of Black with the sole purpose of "ensuring Ionia stability and peace." While the Expeditionary Force includes a number of Night Sisters, the majority of the force is support staff- women from the Matriarchal Order, the bloc the Sisters belong to. The Matriarchal Order is one of the most powerful blocs in the Church of Crissaar and is famed for being made up of exclusively women. The majority of the non-combat forces of the Order are from the Harpy and Siren branches. The Harpies' duty is to oversee other members of the Order and ensure that all rules and regulations are followed. Mistress Laurel (pictured above) has been appointed to oversee the entire Matriarchal Order's Ionia mission.

The Sirens are the missionary arm of the Matriarchal Order. Because the Church of Crissaar holds dominance in Helgara, the Sirens have mostly fallen out of use. Many speculators believe that if Avatar Hira truly does open Helgara on the international stage after ascending to the throne, the Sirens will be sent on missionary missions across Mundus. As to why Sirens would be necessary in Ionia, it is likely there are Inquisitors among their ranks. Inquisitors are infamous, it is their duty to wipe out any hearsay. In the past, Inquisitors have favored unsavory tactics to this goal.

A number of young girls are also part of the Matriarchal's Expeditionary Force. Most of these girls are pledged to one of the three sects that are part of the force, and are traveling to observe and learn. When they come-of-age, and pass the necessary trials, they will be admitted to the Order as full-fledged members. Some have called for the removal of children from mission, saying that the Order is putting these girls directly in harm's way. The Nir'Shado have proven they are without moral code or conduct, and many fear they will not hesitate to kill these girls if the opportunity should arise. When Mistress Laurel was asked about this, she responded, "If Crissaar wills it, I will not stand in the way."

« on: August 21, 2018, 02:19:37 AM »

There had been the usual exchange of greetings and congratulations and then Worten ushered them in for the welcoming dinner, despite the fact that it was 2PM. Hira was annoyed to say the least. He thought maybe his reputation would speed the unnecessaries along, but the Chaplain seemed overjoyed and relished in traditions. They had been rushed into the great hall and almost instantly food was upon them. Hira hadn't even gotten a chance to notice who was seated near him. To his right was Keylo, of-course. Somedays it almost seemed like she was attached to him, the way she cling to him. To his left was Xia. Xia was a strange one. Universally hated by the rest of the Avatars, Hira didn't mind him. Sure Xia had lead the Nir'Shado terrorists, often fighting the church directly. Hira had lost many of comrades to the Nir'Shado, but he had also killed his fair share of them too. But Xia hated the excess of the church just as much as Hira, if not more. Keylo was less sympathetic. She despised Xia. Funny, if not for their allegiances, their hatred of their duties would have made them fast friends. Or at least wary allies.

Hira looked for Harper. She was seated at the end of the table, next to The Widow. He did not envy the poor girl. The Widow could be nosy at the best of times. Even as he watched, the Widow was rambling about something while Harper stared blankly off into space. There was something about the girl that interested him. She was young, younger than even he was when he was raised to Avatar. He almost pitied her, the pulls of power leave their mark on everyone, the young especially. She was said to be exceptionally skilled. Hira had actually chosen her on advice from Yorik. The two rarely talked anymore, but if there was one man that had an eye for talent it was Yorik.

"She's perhaps the most naturally gifted fighter I've ever seen. I knew Keylo in her prime, and Harper comes close. But Harper has something she never had, she has a fighting spirit like you would not believe. The girl refuses to give up, if she's not careful it'll be the death of her." Yorik's words ran through Hira's head.

"But why the girl? Keylo is already the Avatar of Skill."

"If the moment is ever right, ask Harper where her mother is." Hira shook his head. Now was not to be thinking about some old has-been. He focused back on the dinning table. The monks had laid out a wide selection of fish, prepared and cooked in several different ways. They looked freshly catch too. The Avatars had already dug in, chatting with one another.

"Xia, tell me, how much are the Nir'Shado offering to the one that kills you?" Xia turned to Hira and smiled.

"15 million Khronemas if they kill me, 20 million bonus if they can deliver my head."

"Do the Nir'Shado even have that kind of funding?"

"Yes and no. No they don't, but I'm sure they have hackers who are capable of delivering that if need be. It would be very risky for them no doubt. But revenge drives people to do wild things."

"Do you harbor no ill will towards them? Were you not their leader?"

"Yes, I was. I built the first Nir'Shado cells personally. But I trained them well. The hardliners will never surrender their ideals."

"The Nir'Shado are gutless cowards. They use cheap bombs and kill civilians without warrant. To bear the name of the old holy guard of Ionia is a disgrace and a mockery." Keylo, never willing to look past her own point of view. In spite of himself, Hira smiled. He may hate everything about the Council of 13, but at least things never really changed.

Xia turned towards Keylo, like a lion ready to pounce. This was the kind of comment commonly made towards him, and he was ready to defend. "Is there another way to fight in this modern world? When you have powers such as Rokkenjima, Achkaerin, even Moreland? There is no way a little traditional rebellion could ever directly stand against them. The weapons of the military-industrial complex are far too powerful. What can a thousand of angry voices do against a nuke? Or even a squadron of bombers, a division of tanks? Nothing. That is the beauty of my Nir'Shado. If you can't beat your enemy, change the rules of the game. Train freedom fighters to ensure nowhere is safe. Make everyone a suspect and then no one really is. The Nir'Shado can strike at anytime and disappear into the crowd at any moment. This is the way empires crumble in the modern world. This is how nations fall, from within."

"But you're fighting the Church of Crissaar which lacks the powerful military you describe. Helgara doesn't even have a standing army. Terror tactics are cheap and easy."

"Helgara may not have an army, but how many orders answer to the church that house member trained almost from birth to kill? Common people could, and will, never win in a direct fight."

"The members are the church are Crissaar's chosen people, anointed by the Goddess, herself." Xia opened his mouth to reply, but Hira raised his hand and silenced him.

"Come now, this is a happy and joyous time, let us not spoil it with talks of ideology and warcraft." It was at this moment that Worten re-entered the dining hall. Hira couldn't help but wrinkle his nose in disgust. He made his descent across the table towards Hira, stoping to talk to the occasional Avatar, mostly the older ones. He likely knew them from when Valik ascended to Godhood. After what Hira deemed far too long, Worten finally reached Hira.

"Arise Avatar, the time has come from your trials to begin."

Massive Coordinated Nir'Shado Night Bombings Devastate Hamantra

Last night between the hours of 2AM and 4AM over 30 bombs were detonated across the city of Hamantra. The terrorist group known as the Nir'Shado almost immediately took credit. The bombs were of all different makes and sizes, ranging from homemade explosive belts to car bombs, and even a couple of military grade explosives. There are various reports that some of the suicide bombers swore their allegiance to the Nir'Shado before detonating. While the police are investigating, no suspects were arrested, all either successfully fleeing the scene or dying in the blast.

Various new stations received copies of a letter from the Nir'Shado claiming responsibility for the attacks. In the letter the Nir'Shado state that until the traitor Xia is either delivered to the Nir'Shado or executed the attacks will continue. Since Xia's departure from the terrorist group and rejoining the Church of Crissaar, the Nir'Shado have become more violent and reckless in their terror campaign. No doubt these attacks were specifically timed with the Council of 13 in isolation at Guardian's Rest as the new God-Emperor is crowned.

Xia leaving the movement sparked a major shift in Nir'Shado leadership and ideology. Xia was pushing for church and government reforms, mainly focused on what he called the "Helgaran imperial dominance of the Ionia mainland." The new Nir'Shado leaders are a mystery, but seem much more focused on the complete destruction of the Church of Crissaar and the establishment of a new reformed institution in it's place.

Perhaps the two most important targets of these attacks was the Hamantra industrial shipping port and the National Hamantra Oil Refinery. Both are extremely important parts of the Helgaran economy and will have long term economic consequences. While the Council of 13 is unable to act until Hira has ascended, the other Church of Crissaar officials have dispatched a massive number of Blade Masters and Night Sister into the Ionia mainland to work with local law enforcement to hunt down the Nir'Shado. This will likely mark a second wave of increased violence across Ionia, the last one when Xia and the Nir'Shado first made their appearance.

Quote from: The Nir'Shado Letter
The Nir'Shado are responsible for the bombing last night in Hamantra. These attacks will continue and only increase until our demands are met. Firstly we want the life of the traitor Xia. We do not care how, but if the Church lacks the strength to do it itself, we ask that Xia be given to us so that we may kill him ourselves. Once this is done, a message with the next demand will be given. Until then the Nir'Shado will continue to raise our banners and fight this war. Our soldiers are prepared to give themselves in our holy cause. Our will is unbreakable, we know that Crissaar is watching and has blessed us. Can the pawns of the Church say the same?

With the traitor gone, the Nir'Shado have seen the truth of the duty Crissaar requires of us. The Church of Crissaar is a relic of the past. We see now that reform is not possible. In addition, its role in the imperialist seizer of Ionia is unforgivable. Helgara as a nation must destroy the parasite known as the Church that has sunk it claws and teeth into our weak vulnerable flesh. From the ashes, like a phoenix, a new greater Helgara will rise.

Signed,
The Blood Sisters

She was too good to leave the Night Sisters for a less youthful position within the church, but an heir to the Night Mother had already been chosen. When it came time for a new Avatar to be chosen, the Night Mother used the goodwill towards Keylo to ensure she became Avatar, against Keylo's wishes. She despises her place on the Council of 13 and longs for the simplicity of the life of an assassin.

Guardin's Rest

After a few hours of travel, the Council of 13 had finally arrived to Guardin's Rest. It would have been much faster if they had just flown to island of Istra, but tradition demanded that they sailed. At least the castle was on the coastline. Hira couldn't imagine having to ride on horseback to the castle if it was further inland. It wasn't that he wasn't religious, Hira was about to begin the process to become a god, he just didn't care for useless tradition and precedent. Which the next week would be full of. Although he was a bit intrigued, Hira had never seen the rituals that turned man into god. And he wasn't the only one, almost half of the Avatars hadn't either. Valik died an old man. It was good that he was gone, he was everything Hira despised about the Church, ancient and stuck to tradition. It made sense that Valik walked the Path of Light.

Hira was leading the procession as they crossed the bridge and walked to the main gate. He looked back, the Avatars were in their various clumps, always playing politics with that group. There were two stragglers at the back- Harper and Avatar Keylo. Hira didn't know much about Harper despite choosing her to succeed him on the Council. She was young, only 17, and walked the Path of Shadows. Both things he liked about her. She was also said to be extremely intelligent and pragmatic, two traits that would serve the Council well. From what he knew of her, it seemed strange that she would be training to become a Night Sister. The Sisters were skilled assassins, not exactly the place for someone with Harper's mind. Keylo was a different story. She had actually served as a Night Sister for many years before becoming an Avatar. No doubt she felt a sort of kinship to Harper because of it. Hira had heard that Keylo had been extremely gifted as a killer, she had no equal. Her talent earned her the respect of her superior and she was made an Avatar. Politics and leadership did not suit her. She hated the game of influence, secrets and alliances the Council played. It was because of that Keylo was Hira's greatest ally during his time as Avatar, they both despited their contemporaries.

Hira turned to look as the Widow approached him. She was an ancient woman, her back arched as she walked, her knees crackling. No one knew her true name, those that knew her before she was the Widow were all dead by now. Most simply called her Mea, mother. Hira felt a fondness for her, she was sly and cunning in a way some of her years almost shouldn't be. She had a way of simply appearing and sneaking up on people when they least expected it. Hira often wondered if part of her age was just an act.

"Yir (child), are you prepared for the trials ahead?" The Widow asked as she began to walk next to Hira.

"Trials? I thought this was a few simple rituals and some purifications. I figured I have to endure some old men rubbing oil all over my body for a week."

"Ha," her laugh was a high and powerful crack. "To become a God takes more than just oil. This won't be the kind of purification you're use to. Prepare your mind, Hira. They call you Rage Eternal for a reason, do they not? Brute strength will only get you so far."

Strange, Hira had spent his time as an Avatar very well-mannered. Before he left to join the Council, his master had warned him of the same thing.

"Aw, yes. Blade Master Yorik did well to give you that advice, and you did well to heed it. But I caution you again, this road will not be so easy." Hira was shocked, how would the Widow know of Yorik? Seeing the distress on his face, she smiled. "Yorik is an old friend of mine. Few may be old enough to remember it, but I had a long and full life before becoming an Avatar."

"Mea, you never cease to surprise."

At that point, the pair had reached the main gate. On cue, the large wooden doors swung open to the courtyard. One either side the yard was filled with robed figures, their heads hidden under their hoods. They were kneeling, facing towards the other group. They left a small break that lead into the castle. On the right all the robes where black and on the left they were white. Hira marveled at this. He could tell this monks were all quite old. As church officials grew and matured they often began to understand the dual nature of Crissaar, often wearing robes to reflect this, even if they would never join Crissaar Undivided. A small rarity would maintain a strict observance to their chosen path. Even Hira, with his deep hatred for the Path of Light, still had a bit of white on his robes.

A man in full white robes walked out from the castle towards Hira, his arms outstretched. Arch-Chaplain Worten, the head of Guardian's Rest.

"Welcome to where you shall ascend to Heaven. Come let us make you a God."

Avatar Hira Chosen As Next God-Emperor

With the 13 months of mourning after the loss of God-Emperor Valik ending last week, the Council of 13 has announced that Avatar Hira will succeed Valik. Hira is one of the youngest of the Avatars, only 23 years old, and only having served on the Council for 6 months before Valik's death. Despite this many are hopeful that Hira will usher in a new age for the nation. Hira is said to be forward thinking and a great compromiser. He has gained a sinister reputation due to being the Avatar of Rage, but his political career has shown him to be anything but. Many political commentators believe that Hira's first push once ascending to the throne will be to seek more international ties. Helgara has mostly chosen to remain neutral and isolationist in the modern era, its only real interaction with its neighbors being the exporting of the rich Helgaran oil and minerals.

The Council of 13 will be traveling to the historical capital of Helgara, Guardian's Rest, next week in order to preform the rituals and purifications for Hira to ascend to God-Emperor. The trip will last 6 days and 7 nights. What exactly these rituals and purifications are is one of the great mysteries of the Church of Crissaar, only the Avatars and the Grand Clerics of Guardian's Rest are allowed to attend and participate in them. Duke Thaine will be joining towards the end of the trip in order to discuss with the new God-Emperor the governance of the Ionia mainland territory.

In addition, the Council has also announced Hira's successor- an unknown Acolyte named Harper Violet. Harper reportedly belongs to the Path of Shadows, just like Hira. Harper is also rumored to have been studying to join the infamous Night Sisters. There has been no word on what the new Ascendant Face of Crissaar will be, and likely there will be none until Hira officially raises Harper to the position of Avatar.

The Church of Crissaar

The Black Prison, where Crissaar's immortal remains are said to be buried

The Church of Crissaar is the most dominate institution in Helgara. The entire government is formed around the Church's hierarchy. The leader of the Church, once known as the Hierarch, is the God-Emperor (or God-Empress). The God-Emperor is the 13th and deciding vote of the Council of 13. The Council is the absolute leadership of the Church, and thus the state. Their word is law and unquestionable. The God-Emperor's duty is to maintain central leadership and direct the Council. The Council itself is made from the Avatars, each one representing what is known as an Ascendant Face of Crissaar. The Ascendant Faces are manifestations of important social ideas or groups of people. For example some Avatars are the Warrior or the Widow, while the current God-Emperor is Rage Eternal.

The founding of the Church is shrouded in mystery and legend. The Church has existed since before recorded history, or so the Church says. Historical evidence seems to suggest this is true, although the structure of the Church has changed over time. The Church worships Crissaar, a god and a pantheon all in one. Crissaar is said to have infinite "faces" or identities and as thus is all-encompassing. Thus Crissaar is many and one. The belief is that Crissaar once walked among Mundus, living among humans. There are thousands of legends and stories of Crissaar's exploits and adventures, each one is said to contain a lesson.

Eventually Crissaar was killed, murdered by an official of the Old Khronema Kingdom. Fearing that Crissaar may rise again the Khronemans entombed Crissaar within the Black Prison, believing the God's powers would be weakened within. Still Crissaar is said to be able to influence outside events from within the Prison.

Depictions of Crissaar tend to fall into one of two categories, what is called The White and The Black. The White is perhaps the more straight-forward and normal image of a god. The White Crissaar is just, merciful, and loving. This Crissaar is a great general, a fair judge, and heroic adventurer. The Black Crissaar is more of a mockery. This side of Crissaar seems to view human life as a joke and often times uses and manipulates people for entertainment. Crissaar is often a tyrant or murderer. Sometimes the Black Crissaar even seems to make a mockery of the White Crissaar. Acolytes of Crissaar, the lowest rank of church officials, choose to either walk the Path of Shadows or the Path of Light, learning from one of the two forms of Crissaar. A few Acolytes eventually get the honor to join a faction within the Church known as Crissaar Undivided, which is a combination of both Paths. Despite this, most people walk both Paths, although unevenly.
