National Summary

The nations name comes from its founder Sigfrøðr Reenberg.

In 792 Sigfrøðr Reenberg departed Dorotheia (today in Nya Aland) in search of trade routes for his family. As the 3rd son of the family of a relatively middle ranking Lord it was clear that he would be consigned to the status of being either a noble farmer or war band member. Having gained permission her first ventured into West Ardia making contact with several Celtic nations before landing in southern Alba Karinya, particularly setting up trading posts in Mersch. With no land still to call his home and much of the families trading resources having been taken by his brothers Sigfrøðr determined he would undertake one final expedition and with a fleet of boats convinced his Lord to allow him to mount military expedition. In 798 he landed in North West Aranye and established Reenberghöfn. As news of his landing and the new city began to exist others came and he pushed in land. Over several generations and having recruited adventurers from several nations the descendants of Sigfrøðr pushed in land reaching the Great Northern Lake. Finding an island in the centre the family turned that into their fortress.

By the 13th Century the Reenberg family had created a large series of Dukedoms however this began to fall apart. It was during this time they were struggling to keep everything together and so the Reenberg's began to put in place a series of client Kings. This system continued until the 17th Century when another series of instabilities hit. Short of money to keep their holdings in tact and secure the family hit upon the idea of permitting the creation of "Charter Holds" these were areas ranging in size from a village to a metropolitan city that any family could in effect rent for the long term. A central charter was established which anyone acquiring a "Charter Hold" had to agree to and in addition to paying an initial "Incorporation" fee an annual rent and various other conditions could be imposed. This allowed the Reenbergs to become exceedingly wealthy and maintain lands in the North of the territory that they had owned.

Today the family still uphold this system and it has seen Reenberg become a very diverse nation ethically, culturally and spiritually.

Each "Charter Holding" has to agree to abide by a central charter. Part of this includes adhering to basic laws concerning trade between "CHarter Holdings" however those in charge of these Holdings may negotiate better terms for each aspect. To discuss these laws, make changes to them and ensure compliances there is a Charter Council consisting of one representative per Holding.

It is also the responsibility of the Charter Lord to ensure the overall safety and security of all the Holdings and as such each Holding must contribute towards the upkeep of a force for this reason.

Beyond this each Holding is free to be run however they see fit and some are full democracies while others are absolute monarchies.

Foreign Relations

Holdings are free to enter into agreements so long as they do not clash with the Central Charter. Additionally the Charter Lord is able to negotiate deals arrangements with foreign nations on the grounds that it be offered to all Holdings who may opt in or out of the agreement. Matters of defence however are the sole responsibility of the Charter Lord.

The economy is as varied as they different Holdings. Some maintain heavy reliance on agriculture while some of the more urban based Holdings have diversified into banking and finance centred enterprises.

The Charterlands is currently home to over 200 Holdings. The smallest is a farming Hamlet called Nykil which is owned by the Konrad Kjeldsen whose family acquired the land in 1607. It is one of the oldest Holdings and today has a population of just 22 and currently each year must contribute one reservist soldier to the Charterlands military. The largest Holding is Henda which features several towns and villages and has a population of around 3million. Henda is currently run by King Oluwaseyi of the Kayode Family. Henda was established in 1693 by a young son of a tribal chief from Zimalia. Originally the Holding of Henda was paid for in vast numbers of soldiers and bronze which allowed them to gain significant favour and territory. Henda while being run by a monarch of Zimalian descent is actually highly diverse.

Several Holdings have over the centuries reached agreements that go beyond the Central Charter. For example while Article 4 states a Holding may charge a fee for transit for many this is not really enforceable and a large number of free trade areas exist. Some of these arrangements have a vast number of members, others are just between two Holdings. To date other than the Central Charter there is no arrangement that exists that covers all Holdings.

Below are details of some of the key Holdings and agreements between them.

Formed in the early 1800's this is perhaps one of the more influential agreements. It is governed by five Holdings which sit on the Charterlands only coast and as a result have a huge influence on the nations trade. The Union agrees that they will all charge the same tariffs and fees for goods and entry. Several other Holdings have negotiated preferential arrangements with the Union allowing them to access ports for a reduction beyond the Central Charter. The Union have also entered into agreements with the Reenberg family regarding use as Charterlands Naval bases and dockyards for production. As many of their Holdings came complete with fishing rights they have also joined together to share these rights, set limits on fishing quotas and established environmental protection. They even have a centralised coastguard and fisheries inspection system.

Formed in 1913 from three Holdings who can trace their ancestory back to Lijiang. They saw significant numbers of migrants during Lijiangs "mourning" period and agreed to work together. The Holdings are all largely agricultural and are reasonably small having a population of no more than 350,000 people combined. The three Holdings agree that they will set common prices for goods and materials they deal in. In addition they have agreed that they shall share a common militia force known as the Red Shield. Two of the three Holdings are neighbours while one sits some 100km to the East of the others.

The SHA is a rather bizarre group. It can trace its existance to the 1860's when the a Trade Union known as the Farm and Field Hands Association purchased a Holding consisting of 3 small farming villages after its owner had their land repossesed for failing to abide by the Central Charter. With the residents having acquired enough funds to cover the cost of their former Holding owners land the then Charter Lord gave them first chance to buy it. The workers established a People's Council to run it with every decision needing a majority of the community to agree to it. The people also shared equally the profits made by the various small scale industries there. Between then and 1900 the group purchased several other small Holdings and today a total of 16 are part of the SHA. The largest of these consists of a small town with the population of 25,000. The Holdings are governed by a Workers Council which sees every person over the age of 16 given a vote. Large communal farms exist and the SHA have become well known for their fruit farms. They have in the past maintained favourable contacts with the USR and Kaitaine.

The Colony of Reform sits on a very thin sliver of coast and is also a member of the Gulf of Liberty Union. Its coastline is just 5km long. The Colony became a Holding in 1706 when a small parcel of land was acquired by the nation of Royal Seleucid as a place of sending criminals to for forced labour. Once they had completed their sentence a criminal had to purchase their own ticket home or make their own arrangements. Jobs were made avaliable which allowed those who completed their senetence to earn money to return home. Some made their way to other Holdings however the majority stayed and either settled on land which was made avaliable or took up jobs. In 1806 the practice of transportation ended and having told the Reenberg family of their intent to no longer pay it was set to revert back to the Reenbergs when Suleiman Rasharawi, the descendant of a thief sent in 1745 and now the propieter of a tin and coal mine offered to take up the charter. This was granted and now the descendants of Suleiman are known as the Emir's of the Colony.

The Ferrum Respublica as it is known today, occupies as territory the city of Ferrum, and was established in the current status in 1947 being part of the former XXX Holding. Following the Great War and having aligned itself economically with the Ardian Empire, the former XXX Holding went into decline leading to an increase pressure on taxation and lower trade flow following foreign and internal pressure against the pro-Ardia stance. The movement pushed in the year 1944 internal turmoil that pushed itself through foreign support in armement to proclaim the independence in 1947 towards the XXX Holding while pledging loyalty to the Reenburg Family, eventually leading to the city full autonomy and peace. However, having been stripped of any soft power the city went into decline since trade which had been its historical wealth generator went into decline, plundging the city into a slow agony, until reaching eventually bankruptcy in 1958. Welt HSC would propose to finance the Ferrum Respublica in exchange for obtaining free hands over economic reforms and diplomatic relations with neighbouring holdings as to boost local trade and orient towards export, while letting intact the democratic life, a proposal that would eventually be accepted. The Ferrum Respublica is currently a moderate regional trading hub, that have known to diversify its investments and offer banking secrecy policies.

The family may share the same name as the nations founder, Sigfrøðr Reenberg, however they are distant cousins. It would be best to describe Reenberg as perhaps more of a brand than a direct family line. Many of the women in the family have opted to keep the Reenberg name upon marriage. The family practice maintain their own council however this is headed by a single person who maintains total control of the families businesses and property.

Charlotte "Lottie" Reenberg

The current Charter Lord, and thus head of the Reenberg Family is Charlotte Reenberg.

She was born in 1980 and took the position as Charter Lord in 2020 following the death of her father Sven. She is the eldest of three daughters and so inherited all the families land, titles and finances. While these are accessed by the extended family, "after all no Reenberg starves" is a family ethos.

Like all members of the Reenberg family she attended private schools and had tutors. She also was given ample chance to travel and enjoyed experiencing new cultures and places. She attempted to learn many languages and can be considered fluent in Norse, Rus, Latin and Celt. She is a regular attender of the Ball Scene in Lodja and has tried to help the family make significant contacts with the establishment there.

At the age of 18 she went to the Reenberg Institute for Business and Management Studies (RIBMS) where she studied Economics and Media Management. While at University she established her own small scale Tutoring business which is still running today. She graduated in 2001 and began work in the Reenberg families Mineral Division selling and trading the various natural resources acquired by the family such as coal, gas and oil. In 2013 she took over the families Media company which operates TV stations and runs several publications. She continued running this until her father died of a heart attack in 2020 at the age of 78. She now oversees the whole of the Reenberg families dealings.

She is atheist despite the rest of her family still following Norse Pagan faiths. She is also openly bisexual having previously been engaged to a daughter of one of the owners of a larger holding. She has a six year old son born in 2016 during her failed engagement to a Duke from Lodja.

The Family have several key industries that utilise their connections through the Holdings these include.

1. Reenberg Mineral Trade (RMT) - This business is responsible for utilising their share of the various assets extracted from the ground in the holdings. As each Holding must give 5% of their mineral extraction to the family RMT have arranged the storage, transport and sale of these and in some holdings have expanded beyond the 5% by establishing extraction sites of their own having won various contracts. The company also run various extraction operations in the families direct holdings.

2. Reenberg Media Enterprises (RME) - This business operates 26 different commercial TV channels, 18 commercial radio stations and 4 newspapers across the Charterlands. In addition RME also have transitioned several magazines onto the web. RME currently have the commercial rights to several key events in all the Charterlands including football and ice hockey.

3. Reenberg Telecommunications (RTel) - This business is the only one that can establish mobile phone infrastructure in all Charterlands giving it a significant advantage in telecoms through the Charterlands. In addition it has negotiated the right to establish its own networks and sales offices.

4. Reenberg Construction (RCon) - This business is involved in large scale infrastructure. So for example when in 1930 a new cross-Holdings rail network was established the families ability to access lands in all Holdings meant RCon were in the best position to win the contract and as such bring vast sums into the family. Today they still operate as the Charterlands largest infrastructure builders as the family can give them access to all Holdings.
